A critical look at some known (auto) transfer tools

To develop a new tool, the existing tools must first be thoroughly analysed, and the various advantages and disadvantages of a particular product will be examined. During this analysis only the factors that influence standing up and sitting down will be considered.

Handybar

The Handybar is a trip aid, specifically for the car. It fits (almost) every door lock of each car, and it provides an extra sturdy support with a soft non-slip layer. It is light, yet ultra sturdier.

Benefits

Disadvantages

- Fits in (almost) every car

- Additional support while getting out

- Light, but still firm.

- Easy to use

What do you have to do with it after use, take it or put it in the car?

- Ambitious corner to push on

- Only to be used when standing up from the car

- Doesn't fit in too small door locks

Sliding disc

The slide disc is used to make the rotation movement in the car more flexible. This product also provides improved seating comfort, and is suitable for long journeys.

Benefits

Disadvantages

- To be used in any car

- Provides a smoother rotational motion

- Improved seating comfort

- Easy to use

- Only to be used in one car (or to be taken with you)

- Only for rotation, does not provide any additional support or force

- Only to be used in the car

Car Caddie

The Car Caddie is a handle that needs to be attached to the beam above the window of the car. This helps the person then get in and out of the vehicle and provides extra solid support. It is easy and fast to use.

Benefits

Disadvantages

- To be used in any car

- Support during boarding and exiting

- The window must be opened before it can be attached (very impractical in winter)

- Many windows are automatic, in which case the engine must keep running while getting off and cannot be easily switched off afterwards

- The product often shifts while getting out, which makes the support disappear and the person may fall backwards

- The car door is often simply pulled shut instead of the person pulling himself straight

Handy Handle

Handy Handle is a tool to help someone stand up. This method provides a minimal load on the back, is convenient and ergonomic and is very easy to use.

Benefits

Disadvantages

- To be used in multiple situations

- Easy to use

- Does not increase user independence

- Too little effort is needed from the user himself, too stressful for the supervisor

- Is about the same as pulling someone's hands up.

Seat transfer aid

This transfer aid is a stand-up aid, which is combined with a table. It is attached to the left or right foot of the seat and has non-slip feet. The handle is adjustable from height.

Prevenue

Disadvantages

- Adjustable handle height

- Anti-slip feet

- Only to be used in the seat, on a certain side

- Only to be used in 1 seat, not to be taken away

- Once attached to the seat, it is no longer evident to loosen and for example to attach on the other side

Toilet increaser + armrest

This toilet lifter is equipped with some armrests, which makes it easier to stand up from the toilet. The armrest is equipped of non-slip material.

Benefits

Disadvantages

- Easy to use

- Additional support during the stand of the toilet

- Only to use on the toilet

- Only to use at home (very impractical to take somewhere

- Unpractical height for seniors

Conclusion

The most common disadvantage to these tools is that they can only be used in one situation (car, seat, toilet, ...). Often the product is not practical either to take anywhere, so it can only only be applied at the place where it was originally installed. Also, the use of the products is not always practical, and may appear stigmatizing to the user.
