Over three thousand people died last year in the Netherlands from the consequences of a fall, according to statistics from the Central Bureau of Statistics. Every five minutes a 55-pluser falls into the Netherlands. Almost one hundred thousand seniors end up on the Emergency Aid after a fall.
According to the Fall and Fracture Prevention Centre Flanders, a .involuntary injury is the 5th cause of death among 75+, where fall incidents are the main cause of this involuntary injury. Overall, 40 percent of deaths due to injuries/injuries in older people are due to falls. In 40 to 60 percent of elderly people, a fall results in physical injuries such as sprains, lacerations, but also serious injuries suchas hip or other fractures.
As a result of hip fracture, 20% of the elderly become immobile; only 14% to 21% regain full ADL self-employment (Activity of Daily Life), and 25% to 33% die within the year following the fall.
