How do I choose the right support tube?

Which support stockings or compression stockings you need depends on what reason you have for wearing support stocking. For example, runners wear support stocking to prevent heavy and tired legs and not suffer from injuries or muscle pain. Pregnant women often wear therapeutic stockings and medical compression stocking to avoid tired legs or swollen feet and legs. But many people also want to wear compression stocking in order to prevent the worsening of varicose veins. In the next blog you read what options and what compression stocking you need!

What exactly do support stockings do?

Support or compression socks are socks that are specially designed for your lower legs. They cause a decreasing pressure flow from the ankle to the knee which has advantages in many areas for both young and seniors!

This way the socks improve blood circulation and the cells in your muscles get more oxygen, leading to faster muscle recovery, less risk of injury and swelling in the legs. The sock also prevents acidification and cramps during exercise, which makes for a pleasant feeling during and after the effort!

Compression stockings help with:

  • Painful and heavy feeling in the legs.
  • Swelling in the legs.
  • Prevent blood clots, especially after surgery or injury.
  • Less pain in the legs.
  • Prevents varicose veins

Please note that compression stockings are NOT recommended if you:

  • have severe arterial or neuropathological disease
  • - Has a skin infection or dermatitis.
  • Unpredictable swellings. This will affect the fit of the stockings, so a bandage might be more appropriate.

*Consultation with your doctor if compression is necessary

Which types of support stockings can I choose from?

Support stockings can be split into multiple categories based on multiple properties, allowing you to split them up according to purpose, compression level, type of stocking, etc.

Compression level

They consist of four different classifications, or levels of compression, measured in millimetres or mercury (mmHg).

Class Compression level Pressure Use in which symtomas?
1 Low pressure 15 - 20 mmHg
  • Feeling tired and heavy legs
  • Uncomplicated varicose veins without pronounced oedema
  • Mild form of varicose veins during pregnancy
  • Light swollen legs, ankles and/or feet
2 Average pressure 20 - 30 mmHg
  • Feeling tired and heavy legs
  • More pronounced varicose veins and/or moderate oedema
  • Spratate during pregnancy
  • After sclerosis and vascular surgery for varicose veins
3 High pressure 30 - 40 mmHg
  • Severe varicose veins and/or severe oedema
  • Protect from deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Insufficiency (weakness) of the valves in the deep veins
  • After healing severe wounds (open leg)
4 Very high pressure

> 40 mmHg

  • For severe conditions including lymphoedema, post sclerotherapy, venous ulcers, deep vein thrombosis or chronic venous insufficiency.
  • If Class 3 is not sufficient

Length of stocking

There are compression stockings in all lengths.short stockings, socks to just under the knee and stockings up to the hip. Click here and discover our range of support stockings.

Purpose

The stockings can also be split according to the purpose. For example, there are compression stockings for intensive athletes or people travelling long-term, people with certain conditions such as thrombosis, and seniors.

The purpose of the stockings is just a little different in each category. For example, compression stockings for athletes mainly improve blood circulation, preventing acidification and promoting faster muscle reconstruction. They have a low compression level and are hardly to be felt. Under the category'health problems'stockings are for a specific purpose such as prevention of thrombosis, swelling of feet and/or legs and narrowing of blood vessels.

What size do I need?

Compression stockings exist in all sizes, and choosing the right size is crucial. An incorrect fit can cause serious problems with the circulation. With each support tube, the parameters of your foot and leg are asked to determine the correct size. Measurements should always be done in the morning when the legs rest and are not swollen.
