Recognize and treat insect bites

Insect bites can cause various symptoms ranging from innocent itching to severe allergic reactions. It is important to correctly identify an insect bite to take appropriate measures for treatment and any medical assistance.

1. Mosquito bite

  • Symptoms: Itchy red bumps, swelling of the skin.
  • Particularities: May lead to allergic reactions with more severe symptoms in some people.

2. Bee sting

  • Symptoms: Sharp pain at the stab site, redness, swelling.
  • Particularities: May be associated with local pain and swelling, and in some cases severe allergic reactions with breathing problems.

3. Wasp Stitch

  • Symptoms: Sharp pain, burning sensation, large swelling and redness.
  • Particularities: May cause serious allergic reactions; need immediate medical attention if signs of anaphylaxis occur.

4. Draw bite

6. Spider bite

  • Symptoms: Variable depending on the spider; typical pain, swelling, redness.

7. Dazenbiet

  • Symptoms: Painful bite with bleeding wound, swelling and itching.
  • Particularities: May cause allergic reactions; watch for signs of infection after the bite.

Treatment of insect bites:

  • Clean the bite: Clean the bite with soap and water to remove any bacteria.
  • Decontinent: Use alcohol or disinfectant to disinfect the bite site.
  • Cooling: Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and itching.
  • Medicine: For itching and pain you can use a freely available anti-itching cream or antihistamines.
  • Remove tick correctly: Use a special drawing tweezers to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible and gently pull it straight up.

When do you want to see the doctor?

  • If signs of infection such as increased redness, swelling, pain, or pus formation.
  • If severe allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, dizziness or fainting after a bite or stab.
  • If you cannot completely remove a tick or if the tick may have been on the skin for more than 24 hours.
  • In symptoms of diseases transmitted by ticks such as Lyme disease (e.g. a red ring-shaped rash).

The timely recognition and proper treatment of insect bites can help prevent complications and provide rapid relief from symptoms. Always consult a doctor if you are not sure about the severity of a bite or worsen symptoms.
