Why sunglasses are so important

Sunglasses offer more than just comfort. At a later age, wearing them can make the difference between seeing well and developing eye problems. It is therefore essential to choose sunglasses that protect your eyes sufficiently against the harmful effects of UV radiation.

Disorders caused by UV damage:
  1. Cataract: UV radiation can lead to cataract or cataract, with the lens clouded by prolonged exposure to UV rays, which may result in gradual deterioration of vision, which eventually results in complete loss of vision.
  2. Age-related macular degeneration (LMD): Long-term sunlight exposure can cause age-related macular degeneration, whereby the central retina part wears and causes a black spot in the field of vision.
  3. Photokeratitis: This is an corneal damage similar to sunburn of the eye caused by excessive exposure to UV radiation, especially when reflecting sunlight on surfaces such as sand, snow, water and ice.
  4. Lasog: UV radiation can also damage the cornea, resulting in las eye, affecting the epithelium of the cornea and making the eye red and painful.
  5. Skin cancer around the eyes: Thin skin around the eyelids makes them more sensitive to UV damage and increases the risk of skin cancer.
  6. Pterygium: Long-term exposure to UV rays, wind and dust can lead to the formation of a growth on the conjunctiva of the eye, which may result in visual impairment.
The importance of good sunglasses:

Choosing a sunglasses with 100 percent UV protection is essential. This is indicated by labels such as'UV 400'or'100% UV filter'. Also make sure that children wear sunglasse with this protection, preferably from an early age. A sunglassed with a large coverage protects not only the eyes but also the thin skin around the eyes.

It is also wise to protect the eyes with a hat or cap with a wide edge, and avoid sun exposure between 10 and 16 hours when UV radiation is strongest. By taking these measures, you can protect the health of your eyes in the long term.
