Take care of a blister: Open the door or not?

Blisters are caused by friction and are actually second degree burns. It is important to take care of blisters properly to prevent infections and reduce pain. But what is the best approach?

Closed blister:

In the case of a closed blister, it is generally best to leave the blister closed. Piercing a sealed blister can increase the risk of infection. You can slice the blister with a second skin patch to relieve the pressure. However, if the blister is very tense, filled with yellow moisture and probably will burst out, or if the blisters are very painful, it may be justified to puncture them.

Open closed blister:
  1. Clean the blister area with water and soap, or use a disinfectant in the absence of water.
  2. Wash your hands thoroughly and if possible put sterile gloves on.
  3. Take a thin sterile needle or blister stick. If you do not have a sterile needle, you can dip the needle in disinfectant alcohol for several minutes.
  4. Keep the needle parallel to the skin and pierce the base of the blister at different places. Make sure you only puncture the upper skin layer, not the underlying skin, to prevent bleeding.
  5. Push the moisture out of the blister with a clean handkerchief or sterile gauze.
  6. Do not remove the skin from the blister.
  7. Decontaminated the wound with an aqueous, non-colour disinfectant.
  8. Paste the blister with a special adhesive patch, compress or second skin bandage.
Open blister:
  1. Clean the wound with soap and water and any disinfectant.
  2. Cut the loose skin with a fine scissors to create a smooth wound edge. Use a disinfectant alcohol for 2 minutes first.
  3. Decontaminated the wound again.
  4. Apply a special adhesive patch, compress or second skin bandage for several days.
Inflamed blister:

If a blister becomes inflamed, the skin shows redness, warmth and pain, and turbid yellowish fluid comes out of the wound. Clean and disinfect the wound regularly. If the infection does not improve after several days, consult a doctor.
