The future for MS patients

MS is an autoimmune disease that attacks myelin in the body. It occurs more in women than in men and the diagnosis is usually made in people aged between 20 and 40. In Belgium, it is estimated that over 12000 patients live. The symptoms it brings are very different, but the main symptoms are: fatigue, partially sighted, muscle pain,... Some can only be through life using a wheelchair while others can still work.

Cause

Although this disease is not hereditary, genetics does play a role here. In some families it is significantly more common than in others. It is also certainly not contagious. The exact cause of MS is not yet fully certain. It's suspected that it is a combination of genetic factors and environmental factors such as infections, cigarette smoke and vitamin D deficiency.

Evolution of medicine

To date, there is not one particular treatment for Multiple Sclerosis, but some breakthroughs have been made.

At the moment, a drug is prescribed to patients. You do not cure this medicine, but it slows down the disease process by shutting down your immune system. The better this fights the disease, the more dangerous it is for the patient.

Recently, a new drug has been designed to stop the breakdown of myelin only, which reduces side effects. In the long run, this should stop the further deterioration of the body. This is still in a test phase, but it gives good hope.

The latest treatment against MS is stem cell therapy, which stimulates the production of stem cells, which are filtered from blood to add chemotherapy after a high dose. This will cause an immune system reset and can completely cure the disease. Unfortunately, this type of treatment is still very new, expensive and does not come without risk derivatives. In future, we will work towards a solution to cure MS and to remedy the damage done.
