Children and the Sun: Protection for the Little Ones

It is no secret that children are particularly vulnerable when it comes to exposure to the sun. Their still developing skin is thinner and more sensitive than adults, which means they are at higher risk of sunburn and other harmful effects of UV radiation. Here are some important guidelines to protect the smallest from the sun:

1. Protection from birth:
  • Dermatologists recommend that babies should not be exposed directly to the sun during the first 12 months of life. Their delicate skin is not yet sufficiently developed to protect itself from the sun.
2. Protection for young children:
  • From the second year of life, young children may come into the sun with bare arms and legs, but only for short periods and not during noon when the sun shines brightest. Make sure that the rest of their body and head are covered with clothing and a hat. The exposed parts must be generously lubricated with a sun product with a high protection factor (SPF of at least 30) and UVA protection.
3. Systematic protection from 3 years:
  • From the age of 3 years, children should be systematically lubricated with a water-resistant solar product with a high protection factor (SPF of at least 30) and UVA protection. In bright sunlight they must also wear a T-shirt and a hat to provide extra protection.
4. Avoid wet clothing:
  • Never let your children walk around in wet clothing, because wet clothes allow more UV rays than dry clothing. Water drops on the skin can even work as a magnifying glass and enhance the harmful effects of UV radiation. Therefore, always make sure that your children are thoroughly dried after swimming and dress them up in dry clothing .
5. Hydration is essential:
  • Make sure children drink regularly and enough to prevent dehydration and sunburn. On hot days it is important to keep them moisturized, especially when playing outside.

By following these simple guidelines, you can protect the delicate skin of your children from the harmful effects of the sun and ensure that they can enjoy safe and healthy outdoor activities.
