The phenomenon of getting up at night to eat is recognizable for many, but can sometimes be more than just a small hunger. Both the'Night Eating Syndrome'(NES) and the'Sleep Related Eating Disorders'(SRED) are conditions in which people wake up at midnight with an irresistible urge to eat. This can have serious consequences for both physical and mental health.
Not just any ailment.
- NES and SRED:
- NES: People are awake and aware of their eating behaviour.
- SRED: Food is done during sleepwalking and is not remembered.
- Impact:
- Weight gain
- Fatigue
- Despondency due to guilt
- Risk of injuries from sleepwalking with kitchenware
Cause: Sleep problems
- Both disorders can be caused by factors such as stress, impaired biorhythm and sleep quality.
- Vicious circle: Night food leads to less appetite during the day, which in turn leads to more appetite at night.
Approach
- Avoid stress: Sleeping relaxation can reduce stress and help prevent night food.
- Restore biorhythm: Eat at fixed times, even if you are not hungry, and maintain a regular sleep rhythm.
- Comfortable sleeping environment: Provide a comfortable bed, mattress and pillow, and create a soothing bedroom environment.
If these tips do not help or if there are suspicions of sleep disorder, it is advisable to consult a doctor for further evaluation and treatment.
