Menopause complaints:'Not only hot flushes and weight gain'

Many women often associate menopause with known symptoms such as hot flushes and weight gain. However, the transition to menopauses can bring a much wider range of complaints. Chris Van Gaver, a menopaus consultant, provides insight into the diversity of symptoms that women may experience during this phase of their lives.

The beginning and duration of menopause

Premenopause begins when the ovarian egg stock decreases, resulting in reduced production of oestrogen and progesterone. This leads to irregular menstrual cycles and the occurrence of transitional symptoms. Menopause itself is defined by a complete depletion of the ovum stock, resulting from discontinuation of menstrual periods. Once a woman has not had menstrual period for a year, this is considered as menopause. Then the postmenopausal period, which can be the longest stage of a woman's life, begins.

During this time, the body must adapt to the new hormonal balance. It is crucial to consider possible health risks during this period, such as cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes.

Complaints during the transition and menopause

The symptoms of the transition and menopause vary widely from woman to woman. They can be divided into typical and atypical complaints.

Typical complaints:

  • Changes in the menstrual cycle
  • Dry mucous membranes including eyes, nose, mouth and vagina
  • Night sweats and hot flushes

Atypical complaints:

  • Fatigue and listlessness
  • Muscle and joint discomfort, including cramps and restless legs
  • Sleeping problems such as insomnia and difficulty sleeping in
  • Mood fluctuations, including depression and anxiety
  • Libido decreased
  • Bladder inflammation and urinary incontinence
  • Dizziness and headache, possibly resulting in migraine
  • Palpitations
  • Painful breasts
  • Fluid retention
  • Hair loss
  • Changes in appetite and weight, including weight gain and changes in fat distribution
  • Skin problems such as dryness, pimples and itching
  • Forgetfulness and concentration problems

Menopause is an individual experience for every woman. It is essential to understand that symptoms can vary and that it is important to talk to a healthcare provider about any concerns or questions during this transition period. With the right support and understanding, women can look forward to the menopause period with confidence and optimise their well-being.
