1. Drink lots of tea, water or broth
Sufficient fluid intake is crucial in stomach flu. Ginger tea can help with nausea, while a homemade vegetable stock is easily digestible. Water is always good, especially if you suffer from diarrhoea or vomiting, because it compensates for moisture loss. The aim is to drink 2 to 3 litres of fluid per day during stomach flu
2. Eat bananas, rice and toast (BRAT diet)
The BRAT diet, consisting of bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast, is often recommended. These foods stabilize your energy level without irritating your digestion. They are easily digestible and can be a good choice if you have little appetite. Eat small amounts if that's easier.
3. Get your rest
Insufficient rest can worsen the symptoms of stomach flu. Take the time to recover; report ill, rest, and take naps during the day if necessary. Extra sleep helps your body fight the virus. Give yourself the space to recover.
4. Beware of fiber-rich and spicy food
Although fibers are normally healthy, they can irritate your stomach during stomach flu. Avoid fibrous food and spicy dishes, and opt for easily digestible meals. If you feel better, you can add slowly pureed vegetables to your diet.
5. Give your body time
The recovery of abdominal flu varies per person. Give your body time to fully recover and listen to the signals. Generally, symptoms disappear within a week, but in some cases they may last up to six weeks. If you are at risk or if the symptoms are severe, always consult a general practitioner. Abdominal flu is rarely dangerous, but extra caution is needed for certain groups of people.
