The Myth of the 8 Hours Sleep: How much sleep do we really need?

There is often the idea that we all need 8 hours of sleep per night, but reality is more complex. The need for sleep varies from person to person and changes as we get older.

Age-related Sleep Need:
  • Newborn: 16-18 hours
  • 12-year-olds: About 10 hours
  • Teenagers: About 9 hours
  • Adults: Average 7-8 hours

However, some people thrive at 5-6 hours of sleep while others need 9-10 hours. About 10% of the population has enough 6.5 hours per night, while 15% needs more than 9 hours.

Changes in Sleep Need with Age:

As we get older, we often need less sleep. For over 50 people, the average sleep requirement can be less than six hours. The sleep pattern shifts, with them sleeping less at night and napping during the day.

Quality vs. Quantity Sleep:

The amount of sleep we need is also influenced by the quality of sleep. People who sleep only a few hours can still experience deep sleep, similar to others.

Organic Clock and Sleep Rhythm:

Our biological clock is set at 6.5-7.5 hours of sleep per night. A consistent sleep rhythm is crucial because major changes in bedtimes disrupt the biological clock and hinder day-time functioning.

Listening to your body:

The best way to determine your sleep needs is by listening to your body. If you feel energetic, well-equipped and rested during the day, you have had enough sleep at night.

In short, there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to sleep. It is important to listen to your own body and find a sleeping pattern that suits you.
