Although I've been struggling my whole life, I haven't always used a stick. Sticks have their drawbacks: they slow down your pace, make it harder to bridge unevenness in the pavement, and they can't be independent all the time, which is awkward when you need both hands. On the other hand, sticks can provide support while walking, although it does require a custom running style. In short, finding a stick that offers more advantages than disadvantages is not an easy task.

Why wouldn't you use a stick?
This question was often asked when I ran without a stick. At one point my rehabilitation doctor suggested that I walk more from my hips to relieve my ankle. She thought the use of two sticks would help to achieve this. At first, however, I found it difficult to walk with sticks. With sticks you can't easily wave your arms slightly for balance, as I used to.
Moreover, there is a dilemma when walking stairs with two sticks, because you can no longer hold the railing. Also carrying messages became a challenge. It was even so that I went to therapy with the sticks in my bag instead of using them. Eventually the sticks did not help to walk more from my hips, as the rehabilitation doctor had hoped.
Why would you use a stick? I discovered, however, that the use of one stick had advantages for me: people kept more distance, which meant that I was less often grazed. This reduced my fear of falling, as I often lost my balance when people touched me. I also knew how to avoid the disadvantages of the stick: I used a foldable stick or buttoned a non-foldable stick on my belt so I could store it or carry it on my back when I didn't need it. When purchasing a stick there are some points of interest:
- Stitch length: It is important that you can walk upright with a stick. Some poles are adjustable in length, but have a minimum and maximum length.
- Handle: A good grip is crucial. You can choose between a regular handle or an ergonomic handle, depending on your preference and use.
- Stick caps: There are different types of poles, from one to four legs. The choice depends on stability and placement.
- Foldability: Some sticks are foldable, which can be useful for transport.
- Accessories: Think of clamps, frogs and lightly depending on your needs.
Finding the right stick depends on your personal preferences and needs. It is worth trying out different options before making a choice.
