If you notice your child having trouble sleeping because of the heat, here are some tips to optimize sleep, especially during hot summer months or traveling to warm destinations:
- Choose cotton: Use cotton sheets, sleeping bags and pyjamas because these materials hold much less heat than synthetic fabrics. For babies, only a diaper can be enough to keep them comfortable.
- Cool off before bedtime: Give your child a lukewarm shower or a cooling bath before bedtime. A lukegarish bottle instead of a warm can also help to lower body temperature.
- Create a breeze: Open two windows or doors opposite each other in the evening to create an airflow. Wait until the sun is gone to prevent heat transfer.
- Use cooling elements: Put a cooling element from the freezer wrapped in a cloth with your child in bed. An ice cold cherry pit cushion or a cool pack for injuries can also provide lighting.
- Sufficient hydration: Make sure your child drinks enough during the day. Feel free to give an extra bottle of water. This prevents them from getting thirsty at night and possibly having headaches.
- Cooling mats: Cooling mats normally used for pets can also be placed under the sheet in a cot to lower the temperature.
- Cool favorite hugs: If your child has a favourite hug, consider putting it in the freezer before bedtime. This may help to provide some cooling when they are in bed.
With these tips you can improve sleeping conditions for your child during hot weather, allowing them to sleep more comfortably and rest better.
